This model commemorates the “Silver Snoopy Award” that OMEGA received in 1970 for helping to get the Apollo 13 crew safely home. The watch has a representation of the “Eyes on the Stars” patch on the subsidiary small seconds dial as well as reverse printed on the sapphire crystal caseback. It was limited to 5,441 pieces referencing the length of the mission – 142 hours, 54 minutes and 41 seconds.
The calibre 1861 was the natural evolution of the calibre 861 which had previously been used in many Moonwatch models. For the upgrade, it was made with a more corrosion-resistant rhodium-plating. Its frequency remained the same as the calibre 861 at 21,600 v/h and it featured the same shuttle cam and Delrin chronograph brake designed to preserve the teeth of the chronograph seconds wheel and avoid abrasion and fatigue.
